Merry Christmas from Newquay

This morning, I woke up to a feeling that words can barely capture—a mix of happiness, gratitude, and quiet reflection. Christmas has a way of bringing everything into focus—the things we cherish, the challenges we’ve faced, and the beauty that surrounds us. For me, this year has been about navigating through life’s storms, finding moments of light, and rebuilding from the ground up. But today, I woke up with a heart full of appreciation for what I do have—the life I’m building, the incredible people who’ve supported me, and the magic of living here in Newquay.

The day started early—Harriet and I pulled on our wetsuits, a bit bleary-eyed but buzzing with festive energy. We’d made Christmas hats to wear with our wetsuits (because why not?) and headed down to the sea for an early morning surf. The swells were brilliant, the water cool but invigorating, and the experience... well, it was pure joy. There’s something about the ocean that grounds you, humbles you, and fills you with clarity. For those few moments, riding the waves under the morning sky, it felt like everything was exactly as it should be.

After the surf, it was time to dive into Christmas traditions. I rolled up my sleeves and got to work in the kitchen. On the menu? A shoulder of lamb, slow-roasted to perfection, paired with what I’m convinced were the most incredible roast potatoes in the world (no exaggeration). The aromas filled the house, and with a full spread on the table, a glass of red wine in hand, and the warmth of the day wrapping around me, I couldn’t help but feel the richness of the moment. Christmas, in its purest form, is about these small joys—savouring the good, holding onto the people who matter, and creating memories that last.

This year hasn’t been without its challenges—there have been moments of difficulty and heartache. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: life is good. It’s not always easy, and it’s rarely perfect, but it’s what we choose to make of it that counts. There’s beauty in the smallest things—a kind word, a shared laugh, a wave crashing against the shore. Even in times of adversity, we can find moments of light if we’re willing to look for them.

To everyone who has supported me, shown up for me, and had my back this year—you mean more to me than I can ever express. To those here in Newquay who’ve welcomed me into this vibrant community, you’ve made this place feel like home in a way I never expected. And to my family, who’ve been patient and loving from afar, thank you for reminding me what truly matters.

This Christmas, I’m holding onto gratitude—with both hands. Gratitude for the surf, for the shared meals, for the moments of connection that remind us why life is worth living. Gratitude for the challenges that shape us, the people who lift us, and the beauty of making something new from the pieces of what was.
So, here’s my message to you this Christmas: find joy where you are. Be present. Be grateful. Life is full of waves—some will knock us down, but others will lift us higher than we imagined. Hold onto those moments. And when you can, be the person who helps someone else find theirs.

Merry Christmas to all of you. Wherever you are, I hope your day has been filled with laughter, love, and a plate of roast potatoes that rival mine.

Cheers,
Neil 🎄🌊🍷
